Home Equity Loans are becoming more popular as interest rates are at a historic low. This is a great way to get money to renovate, consolidate credit cards, go on a vacation or for other purposes. It differs from refinancing to get cash, in that you keep your original mortgage and the home equity loan is a separate loan. You can’t borrow 100% of the equity in your home for a home equity loan. The maximum amount you can borrow varies, but it’s usually between 75% and 90% of the value of the home. Other factors such as your credit score, debt-to-income ratio (DTI) and loan-to-value ratio (LTV) also determine how much you can borrow.
